A 60-year-old man was killed Tuesday when he crashed a single-engine, homemade propeller plane through the roof of a Massachusetts condo building.
The crash occurred in Methuen, a town near the New Hampshire border. Capt. Randy Haggar of the Methuen Police Department said the agency first heard of the crash about 1 p.m.
The plane, Haggar said, caught fire, prompting firefighters to arrive on scene to extinguish the blaze. The pilot was identified by several local __news sources as Al Lavender, who the Eagle-Tribune in North Andover determined was the former mayor Newburyport, Massachusetts.
There were no passengers on the plane, Haggar said, and no one was in the building when the crash occurred. Dramatic photos of the scene, captured by police, show the tail end of the plane sticking through the yellow building's roof as smoke drifts into the air.
Haggar said the Federal Aviation Administration will launch an investigation.
WCVB in Boston reports the plane took off from Lawrence Municipal Airport, located just a few miles away, as part of a practice takeoff and landing. The FAA, as reported by WCVB, said the plane was attempting to land at the airport when it crashed.
