An elderly man whose body was found in Cork is suspected to have died after an accidental fall.

The man, who is 68, was found with head injuries in the Cork harbour town of Cobh, not far from a steep embankment close to his home.

It is understood the man had been socialising with friends at a party in the locality and was walking home alone when the incident occurred.

Garda sources indicated that there is nothing to suggest, at this stage in their investigation, that the incident was suspicious or that foul play may have been involved.

One theory being examined by gardaí is that the man may have slipped and fallen while he was walking home, accidentally striking his head in the process.

Overnight and late evening frost and ice have been commonplace in Cobh over the past week and may have been a factor in the tragedy.

The scene was preserved by gardaí to allow for an investigation into the matter.

A full post mortem examination will be conducted by Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster.

That is expected to take place at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Gardaí stressed that the nature of their investigation will be determined by the post mortem examination results.
