IT WAS Australian cinema and television’s night of nights, but one star turned heads for a different kind of reason.

Cate Blanchett, who was hosting the Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) awards in Sydney last night, not only turned up to the ceremony on the bus, but seemed to leave her underwear behind.

She also confessed that she’d caught the bus to the ceremony, so she could stand up while travelling, and avoid crinkles on her gown.

Kyle Sandilands’ diva demand: ‘Don’t film me from the side’

WHO knew Kyle Sandilands was such a diva?

In a “highlights from the week” package which aired on his Kiis FM breakfast program this morning, some behind the scenes audio of Kyle losing the plot at a show staffer was included.

What caused his minor meltdown? Being filmed from an unflattering angle.

“I told you, don’t film me from the side where you can see my fat gut!” barked Kyle.

“I’ve told you that a million times. Standing at the side there, it’s disgusting. How hard is it to understand?”

Cuba Gooding Jr says despite Academy Awards snub, Selma director is the ‘real deal’

CUBA Gooding Jr may only have a small role in the Oscar-nominated Selma — as prominent civil rights attorney Fred Gray — but he’s as proud of it as any film from his 30-year career.

“There are so many powerful scenes in that script that I can’t wait to see the audience reaction to,” he says of the drama, which follows Martin Luther King’s voting rights march in Alabama in 1965.

It’s also another step in the 47-year-old’s career resurgence that includes historical drama The Butler, upcoming TV miniseries American Crime Story (Gooding will play O.J. Simpson in this spin-off from the creators of American Horror Story) and the Ben Stiller-produced comedy series Big Time in Hollywood, FL.

Gooding laughs that his acting revival has only come about now that he’s got another passion: writing screenplays.

“Right when I say, ‘Fine, I’ll put acting on hold and try this writing thing’, I’ve had more offers than I’ve had in my entire life. I mean, I won the damn Oscar and went a year without an offer and now it’s crazy. It’s crazy!

“Of course you guys are coming at me now, when I’ve finally let go. Once I finally stop saying, ‘I want to make a statement as an actor’ — boom! — now people want me to make statements again.

“But that’s all right, everything happens in God’s timing in my life. I believe that this is just another phase.”

Selma has hit hot buttons in the US, with a former aide to Lyndon B Johnson claiming that it was unfair to the former president, and Academy Awards voters declared racist when, despite the film receiving a Best Picture nod, both its director, Ava DuVernay, and leading man, David Oyelowo, were snubbed.

Pushing buttons ... David Oyelowo (left) discusses a scene with director Ava DuVernay on

Snubbed or not, Gooding Jr reckons second-time director DuVernay (a former film publicist) is “the real deal”.

“She was so focused on everybody’s role, from the extras to the actors to the lighting department,” he says. “I’ve racked up 70 some odd films already in my career and I look at the most important element of any set as the directing. The older I get the more I realise that.”

Gooding may also direct some day — he produced 2014 drama Freedom (directed by Australian Peter Cousens) and hopes his writing will lead him to the top job.

“I submitted my second screenplay to my agent and it got really positive feedback. But my whole reason for writing a script was to show them how I would be as a director,” he says.

Asked if he took the chance to get in the ear of Selma co-star and producer Oprah Winfrey about backing one of his scripts, Gooding gets a little shy.

“Nobody else is listening so I can tell you quietly ... when I write my scripts I use a pseudonym. When people read it they don’t know I wrote it until after they read it. It’s the same with Oprah — if she reads one of my scripts it will be because somebody submitted it to her, not because I wrote it. That’s how I like it.”

As far as Oprah’s acting work on the film, he adds, “she’s wonderful in it”.

Mid-conversation, Gooding’s phone rings — it’s his agent. Asked if he needs to take the call, the actor zings: “You don’t think they’ll call back? I told you lady, I’m hot right now! I’m on a roll!”

Rolls, of course, don’t always roll the right way. Case in point: 22 years ago, Gooding came to Australia to make a film with Paul Hogan, the western turkey Lightning Jack.

“I think about that time period and I regretted it for a long time because I chose that movie over Crimson Tide (the submarine thriller starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington), but I don’t regret it anymore,” Gooding says.

“I don’t regret it because Paul Hogan is a dear friend now. And I travelled the world with it. It was my first worldly experience. Little did I know it would lead to travelling the world with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (while promoting Jerry Maguire two years later) ...

“That was the first taste of that. It was wonderful. It will always be special to me.”

As for his current roll, Gooding’s energy and enthusiasm is contagious. The next 30 years of his career, we suggest, may be more interesting than the first.

“Your lips to God’s ears, my dear,” he replies.

Prolific social media user James Blunt accused of ‘homophobic’ tweet

JAMES BLUNT has been accused of homophobia after he tweeted about “picking up soap” in response to a magazine cover.

The illustration on the front of News Statesman depicted Blunt along with other famous figures including Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Martin and David Cameron under the tagline: “The class ceiling: From pop to politics, does it pay to be posh?”.

The pop star responded with the comment: “I won’t be picking up the soap when this party moves to the showers.”

— James Blunt (@JamesBlunt) January 28, 2015

But LGBT campaigners and fans are unimpressed with Blunt’s joke about the group, which also included Eddie Redmayne and Boris Johnson.

LGBT charity Stonewall told The Independent: “In 2015 it’s astounding that old ‘jokes’ about gay men dropping the soap in a shower still do the rounds, particularly given today’s popularity of shower cremes. It’s disappointing that James had to trot out a tired 1970s homophobic gag, but gay people will be pleased to know that he does have a new album out (available from all good retailers).”

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell told the Daily Mail: “It would be helpful if James could explain what he meant by those words and make it clear he is not homophobic.”

@JamesBlunt @NewStatesman A rape joke and homophobia all in one sentence. Very nicely done, Mr Blunt. *slow handclap*

— Lisa Gifford (@LisaGifford) January 28, 2015

Others branded it a “rape joke”, telling Blunt his comments ”weren’t cool”.

The tweet comes soon after the outspoken singer branded UK politician Chris Bryant “a classist gimp” for saying the arts were dominated by former public school boys, naming Blunt and Redmayne among the privileged elite.

It also follows a recent outcry when The Imitation Game star Cumberbatch was called racist was referring to “coloured actors” on live TV.

While Cumberbatch apologised for the gaffe, Blunt has dismissed criticism over his tweet as “today’s PC news.”

And in today’s PC news, jokes about public school boys rogering each other are OFF! Even if we did. http://t.co/RCVKoOEE6l

Sneak peek at I’m A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! base camp

THE Project has shared a bug-filled behind-the-scenes glimpse at I’m A Celebrity headquarters.

Hosts Julia Morris and Chris Brown — who look like they will be observing all the action from a very cushy suite high above the ground — warned that while all may look serene at the South African base, it’s far from paradise.

MORE: First look inside jungle camp

“Lurking under the water, there are heaps of crocs and heaps of hippos,” Morris said, deadpan.

Bondi Vet himself added: “Without a doubt, the thing that is keeping our celebrities awake at night in that jungle are the creepy-crawlies. Over half a million insects, bugs, snakes, lizards, reptiles, leopards, lions, hyena.”

The critters will play a huge role in the challenges our 10 celebrities will face, and they might even be enough to send some packing.

JOHNNY Depp and Amber Heard will finally tie the knot in a week at his private island in the Bahamas.

Sources told the New York Post the Mortdecai star, 51, and his fiancee, 28, will marry in an intimate ceremony at his Little Hall’s Pond Cay island home. We’re told the guest list will include just 50 people, including Heard’s family and Depp’s children with former love Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose, 15, and Jack, 12.

We’re told accommodations are so sparse that guests are staying on a yacht during the festivities. Depp has a 156-foot vessel called Vajoliroja, which he reportedly keeps parked at his tropical island compound.

Sources told the New York Post, Heard and Depp chose the February 7-8 weekend after working around their various schedules. “She’s filming a movie in London, and he’s getting ready to film the next Pirates of the Caribbean in Australia,” a source told us. “So this is the only time that everyone could get together.”

Heard will wear a gown by Stella McCartney for the ceremony, our source said.

The couple met while making the 2011 movie The Rum Diary and were engaged in December 2013 after a year of dating.

Last March, Heard and Depp threw a medieval-style engagement party at Carondelet House in downtown LA, attended by Steven Tyler, Mandy Moore, Jerry Bruckheimer, Marilyn Manson and Depp’s mother, Betty Sue Palmer.

Depp bought the 45-acre lot of islands in Little Hall’s Pond Cay for $US3.6 million ($4.5 million) after shooting Pirates of the Caribbean in 2004. The island has six beaches, which are named after Depp’s children, Paradis, and his close friends Hunter S. Thompson and Marlon Brando.

The hideaway is only reachable by seaplane or boat. Depp told Vanity Fair in 2009 of the locale: “I don’t think I’d ever seen any place so pure and beautiful. You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats. It’s instant freedom.”

COLIN Farrell says his former co-star Ewan McGregor is too modest about the size of his manhood.

Farrell, who starred with McGregor in the 2007 Woody Allen movie Cassandra’s Dream, says he got a glimpse of the Scot naked during filming and the image has stayed with him.

“I don’t think Ewan is as proud of his penis as most men who are as well hung would — or should — or could be,” Farrell told Nylon Guys magazine. “I think that’s the greatest demonstration of his innate humility, that he doesn’t wear it like a badge of honour.”

Maybe Farrell is showing a little jealousy after previously saying that his manhood is “nothing to f***ing write home about”.

However, a sex tape released in 2006 of the Irishman showed that he had nothing to be ashamed of.

McGregor for his part has stripped off in a few movies including Trainspotting, The Pillow Book and Young Adam.

Understandably he has no issue in appearing before the cameras in the raw.

“Being naked is something that happens in either end of the day for me, and if you’re lucky, somewhere in the middle as well,” he said. “And I don’t understand why it’s an issue”.

Russell Crowe’s WWI drama The Water Diviner ties for major AACTA award with The Babadook

RUSSELL Crowe’s mainstream WWI drama The Water Diviner and Jennifer Kent’s little-seen horror film The Babadook have spilt the vote at this year’s AACTA Awards, tying for best film.

It’s the first time there’s been a dead heat in the main category since the long-running Australian film and television event (formerly known as the AFIs) took its current form in 1976.

Kent also took home the prestigious best director and best original screenplay awards for her haunting drama, featuring Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) as a single mother driven to distraction by a malevolent supernatural presence.

It’s the second year in a row that the AACTAs has played out as a David and Goliath-style battle - although in 2014, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby ultimately outsparkled Laotian language longshot The Rocket when the awards were announced - taking home a record-equalling 13 gongs.

While The Water Diviner and The Babadook are both directorial debuts, Crowe’s film, which has taken more than $14 million at the box office, certainly had the popular vote.

The Babadook failed to resonate with Australian audiences when it opened in May, taking just $260,000 at the local box office.

But Kent’s film has been enthusiastically received overseas.

After winning the award, Kent said: “One thing I know is the rest of the world loves

Australian film and I hope one day we love it as much as they do.

“I would love to make more films here and I hope I do.”

Paying tribute to Kent, producer Kristina Ceyton said it had been an incredible ride “and we all know you are going places”.

The New York Film Critics Circle voted it best first feature in December.

And both Exorcist director William Friedkin and horrormeister Stephen King gave Kent an enthusiastic thumbs up ahead of the film’s US release.

Kristen Wiig, Glenn Close and Geoffrey Rush are just some of the Hollywood stars who also heaped praised on Rose Byrne at the AACTA Awards.

Byrne was presented with the inaugural AACTA Trailblazer Award for her contribution to the industry.

“You can’t have it all.” Her Damages co-star Close said she was so proud of Byrne, while Rush praised her performances, from falling in love with Brad Pitt in Troy, starring in Australian movies The Turning and Two Hands, or shining in the musical Annie and stealing the show in comedies like Bridesmaids.

“You’re mercurial, magnetic, soulful. A chameleon,” said Rush. “And tonight, you’re a trailblazer.” Bryne thanked the industry and her family, as well as boyfriend Bobby Cannavale “for coming all the way here, my darling”.

“It’s really dear to my heart,” she said of the award. “I’m so proud to be Australian and be part of our wonderful industry here.” Wiig and Close weren’t the only surprise international stars in the ceremony.

Colin Firth delivered a recorded message for The Railway Man, which is up for best film, and Ryan Gosling made a shock appearance too.

Speaking from the set of Nice Guys with Russell Crowe, Gosling helped present one of the awards, and even tried his hand at an Aussie accent.

“I’m honorary Australian,” he said. “I lived in NZ for two years so I’m sweet as `bro.”

How Iggy Azalea went from a white girl in regional Australia to becoming an international hip hop star

The glamorous and chart-topping Iggy Azalea.

The glamorous and chart-topping Iggy Azalea. Source: Supplied

SHE’S a little bit fancy. She’s been called everything from a Glamazonian Centaur to a talentless wannabe.

Her accent is a weird hybrid of regional Australia and ghetto fabulous Miami.

Her legions of fans are called Azaleans and she starts online trends with the flick of a tweet.

She is a white female rapper from northern NSW who moved to America at 16 and now, 10 years on, she’s topping the charts in Australia, New Zealand and the US.

But who is Iggy Azalea?

Well, for starters, she’s the woman who has done something only the Beatles before her have managed.

In June her two biggest hits, Fancy and Problem (with Ariana Grande), matched the Fab Four’s chart record of having the No.1 and No.2 spot on the Billboard charts with her first two entries.

“I never really expected my career choice to turn me into Katy Perry-level fame because I know it (rap) isn’t that popular with people,” Azalea told radio.com after her song Fancy went to the top of the charts in several countries last year.

“I think I’m pleasantly surprised that people seem to be interested,” she understated, keeping it real.

And if Azalea’s blitzing the charts, she’s smashing social media out of the ball park.

Her Instagram feed @TheNewClassic has 6.1 million followers; on Facebook she has a precipitous 6.5 million “likes”; there are almost four million followers on Twitter and her combined YouTube views are more than a billion, A BILLION.

To say she is all right at social media is like saying her boyfriend, LA Laker Nick Young, is OK at basketball. Iggy and her team absolutely nail it.

The next musical mountain for Azalea to conqueur is the Grammys, which may only be days away.

The 26-year-old has been nominated for Best Rap Artist at next Sunday’s awards and, despite long odds of a white Aussie girl taking out the best rap catetory, it seems it may not be such a long shot.

If she does pull it off her haters are really gunna hate. Snoop Dogg and other rappers such as Azealia Banks have tried to bring Azalea down because of the way she looks and the way she talks.

But Azalea’s still managed to come out on top.

Late last year Snoop Dogg posted a mean meme of a girl that looked vaguely like Iggy ‒ except she had braces and a rather unfortunate face ‒ with the caption “IGGY AZALEA NO MAKEUP”

After Iggy’s mentor, rapper T.I. stepped in to play peacemaker. Snoop then posted a video saying “No more bad talk. I apologize. I won’t do it again.”

Azalea 1; Snoop 0.

Despite that, or perhaps because of it, Australian music fans are already calling her “Our Iggy”.

Though for us to claim her then disown her when she doesn’t play ball on our terms is a bit rich. We’ll get to that, but first let’s get to know her story.

Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly in Sydney in 1990, Azalea moved to modest Myocum on the NSW north coast with her family as a toddler, later shifting to nearby Mullumbimby.

With a population of 3173, there wasn’t much to do there but dream of being a rapper.

Azalea looking completely unrecognisable in high school photo from 2002

Azalea’s primary school English teacher Amanda Betterson first introduced her to hip hop and in year 7, she delivered her first performance at the Lismore Police Citizens Youth Club.

“She used to actually teach the kids to do rapping and hip hop in class,” Azalea’s mum Tanya told the Daily Telegraph.

“I always knew Amethyst would do something to do with words and now she’s a modern-day poet,” she added with a little bit of bias. Bless.

For her stage name she chose her dog, Iggy, and the street she grew up in, Azalea.

Hold your porn name jokes. Her mum still lives in their Azalea St home, a place where Azalea hypnotised chooks and sometimes walked around with one on her head like she was carrying a water bucket.

The blonde superstar is 178cm tall so that would have been quite a fall.

“My family is there. I’ll always be from there. It’s who I am,” Azalea told me in an interview before her turn as support act on Beyonce’s 2013 Australian tour.

When I spoke to her, Azalea’s single Work was beginning to chart. This was right before Fancy and Problem sent her into the stratosphere.

By 16 Azalea was tired of the life in the slow lane of Mullumbimby so she left for Miami, promising her parents she’d return while crossing her acrylic nails behind her back.

She raps about it in her single Work: “No money, no family, 16 in the middle of Miami.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing once she got to the US. Struggling to find her feet in Miami, she moved to Houston, Texas, then to Atlanta, Georgia.

Just like Atlanta’s rap heroes OutKast, you can hear Azalea’s southern fried timbre when she raps on Beg For It and Murder Bizness from her debut album The New Classic.

Musically, Azalea’s sound has been honed since her first two single releases Pu$$y and Two Times.

They were raw to say the least. Clearly, she was still in the embryonic phase of her career.

Overtly sexual clips for the tracks went viral, Azalea’s striking, err, dimensions won her fans and already she had critics and other rappers lining up to tear her down for using her looks to gain notoriety.

Par for the course in the rap game, really.

Iggy Azalea’s detractors have lined up for a while and you can be sure the patriarchy is to blame for a lot of it.

When asked by Vanity Fair recently if she thought the criticism aimed at her was misogynistic, she shot back: “Well, they don’t say that stuff about Macklemore. So, yes, I think it has 100,000 per cent to do with the fact that I have a vagina.”

Being a white girl in a predominantly black game has raised the ire of many, too. Azalea has had to stand tall.

“Well, I never thought it was strange. If you go back to the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley and Eminem — they’ve all basically done black music. I felt this wasn’t that far from what we’ve seen in music history over and over again,” she shrugged.

And there were a few noses out of joint when Azalea didn’t make an in-absentia ARIA Awards acceptance in December for winning Breakthrough Artist.

Really though, what does she owe Australia? Diddly squat.

She’s made her name overseas, still sees her family and there is no evidence to suggest ARIA actually contacted Azalea to ask for a token thankyou video.

No wonder she barely gives interviews to Australian press after it became a clickbait “story”. It hasn’t hurt her popularity here; Fancy went to No.2 on the ARIA charts without even a promotional tour.

Speaking of awards, Azalea beamed, “This is the first award I’ve won in my entire life” at the American Music Awards in November.

Not only did she win one, she doubled her career trophy tally before the night was out, beating big names Drake and Eminem to win Favourite Rap/Hip Hop Artist and Album.

Fittingly, she said in her speech “(hip hop) inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams, and it’s what helped me when I was a teenager to escape and to get through my life and to better times.”

We’ll see how she goes next weekend when she heads to the Grammy with Young in tow.

Her current love is making her exes look second-rate. Relationships with Hefe Wine and A$AP Rocky ended badly.

Wine is threatening to release a sex tape and the two are doing battle in court.

“I do not have a sex tape; I would remember if I had a sex tape. But if I did have a sex tape it would be completely f---ing fine and my own business,” Azalea told Vanity Fair.

Her relationship with rapper A$AP Rocky was fast and furious, too. She even had his name tattooed on her finger but has since crossed it out after they split acrimoniously.

Before The New Classic was released she told me about a song called Time Piece.

“It’s about a Rolex I bought for somebody that I had a relationship with. It’s saying, you can keep the watch that I gave you but can I have all the time back that you f---ed off me? I wasted all my time on you, bought you this f---ing watch, can I get my life back? It’s real.”

Now she has the support of a good man. Nicknamed Swaggy P, Young and Azalea moved into an LA mansion together recently and regularly attend sporting events and music industry soirees.

Just a fortnight ago the two were put on Kissing Cam at a college basketball game. Instead of kissing her beau, Azalea licked his cheek, the crowd went bananas.

When she’s not on tour, Azalea enjoys domestic bliss in Los Angeles.

“I’m a homebody. I already did all my wild s---. I’m glad I did all that early, because now I have so much to talk about in my music, and I don’t have to worry that I’m going to spiral out of control.”

Very much in control of her career, Azalea has just begun work on her second album. She’ll be keeping the Azaleans up to date through her social media channels.

Speaking in the February issue of GQ, Azalea is philosophical.

“At the very worst, if I have a short-lived career, at least I could say I sparked a change that I inspired some leniency in what people accept in hip hop,” before pausing, “And if I have a very long career and can be gyrating in a leotard at 35, that would be great.”

Kangaroos, the Harbour Bridge and Vegemite on toast — supermodel Heidi Klum has embraced the Australia Day long weekend with an Aussie trifecta.

“This morning I was surprised with the Cherry Ripes, the Tim Tams and I had Vegemite on toast and the sausage rolls,” she told The Daily Telegraph at Sydney’s famous Bondi Icebergs.

“This time around I enjoyed (Vegemite) more than the last time I had it and I think its because they put it on too thick. It was perfectly toasted, butter with just a little bit of Vegemite. I was like wow either my tastebuds had changed or maybe they did it better this time because I remember last time it was smothered with it and was very strong and different and I’d never had it before but this time I liked it.”

“I went to the zoo with the koala bears and the kangaroos and giraffes. It’s a beautiful zoo.,” she said. “From there I looked at the clock and said we still have time to do the Harbour Bridge climb because the last time was 15 years ago and I loved it so I wanted to do it again.”

Klum’s new range launched this month, replacing Elle Macpherson Intimates.
