Millions of women woke on Tuesday with one goal: To crack the country's highest glass ceiling once and for all.

The possibility proved electric, and emotions ran the gamut from euphoria to tears. As Hillary Clinton supporters hit the polls, some women (and men) voters wore white, a nod to the suffrage movement that afforded women the right to vote in 1920. In Rochester, thousands of people, a large majority of them women and girls, queued up to visit the grave of women's rights crusader Susan B. Anthony, who famously cast a ballot in 1872 knowing it was illegal, and was subsequently arrested.

At poll stations, women arrived with their mothers, daughters and sisters. Many wore pantsuits, a voting day dress code that proved as popular as the trending hashtags #ImWithHer and #nastywomen, the latter a reclamation of an insult hurled by Republican nominee Donald Trump during the last presidential debate.

That #pantsuit you've tucked all the way back in your closet... Bring it out ladies, bring it out!! #imwithher#pantsuitnation#nastywomen

"Just high fived a #pantsuit wearing wearing stranger. This is a weird day," tweeted Lucy Arnold, whose bio identifies her as a teacher and writer.

In Columbia, S.C., consultant Elizabeth Wilson set a soundtrack to her day, playing Beyoncé's Run the World (Girls) and Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop on her Instagram Story-documented morning walk to her polling station. "I was feeling excited, ecstatic, happy, lucky to be part of this historic moment," said Wilson. "The country as been ready, for a few decades, for a woman president."

    — Lauren Koontz (@lauren_koontz) November 8, 2016

In Rochester, supporters continued the tradition of decorating suffragette Susan B. Anthony’s headstone at Mount Hope Cemetery with their 'I Voted' stickers.

"I'm voting for the first woman president. As a woman I can vote because of the sacrifices she made," said Gillian Paris of Brighton, who affixed her sticker to Anthony's marker shortly after sunrise.

"I never cried when I filled out my ballot before. But I realized my daughters — and I have three of them — have the right to vote for a woman. It made my cry," said Jodi Atkin of Irondequoit, NY, who trekked to the grave site with daughter Jessie. Both were clad in white.

In Greenville, "monumental” is the word  Inez Tenenbaum, South Carolina’s former state Superintendent of Education, used to describe the day. “Other women, such as Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, Indira Ghandi, Golda Meir have led countries for decades,” said Tenenbaum, a South Carolina attorney who was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2009 to chair the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

So what took the U.S. so long?

Expectations of propriety and a woman's place took their toll, says Myra Gutin, a first-lady historian and professor of communications at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. She notes  that even after the 19th Amendment was ratified, “the percentage of women who voted was not very high in large measure because their husbands discouraged them. They were told it was unladylike and it was unseemly for a woman to soil her hands in politics."

And it's taken 96 years since the 19th Amendment was ratified for a woman's name to appear as a major party candidate on an general election ballot.

“The march for women’s equality has been a long and slow one, but every since 1920 when women go the right to vote there always has been a back burner hope that we’d have a first female president. And Hillary Clinton has worked assiduously to be that person,” says Douglas Brinkley, a history professor at Rice University.

Dusty Deming, a Greenville, S.C., marketing and public relations professional, said she hoped a Clinton win would lead to women's leadership in business and government to be be taken more seriously. “Maybe it will inspire women to take on the mantle of leadership and believe that it is theirs and not be so deferential to tradition," she said.

Clinton's run will buoy others, predicts Gutin, who calls this election “a go-sign for a lot of women in spite of what she went through, because perhaps women can see it’s worth the fight and you do have a chance to be an agent of change.”
