WASHINGTON — Donald Trump and aligned fundraising committees reported collecting $100 million in September, the Republican's largest monthly haul of the election but far short of $154 million Democrat Hillary Clinton and her allies raised last month.
Trump's campaign and the two joint fundraising committees he established with the Republican Party — Trump Make America Great Again Committee and Trump Victory — ended the month with a combined $75 million in cash reserves. That's half the $150 million that Clinton and her joint fundraising committees had remaining in the bank.
More than 2.6 million people have donated to Trump's campaign, his aides said in a statement about the September haul. Trump, whose longstanding battles with the party's establishment have escalated in recent days over charges of his alleged sexual misconduct, has relied heavily on small donors to boost his campaign.
Trump's campaign also said the New York businessman donated $2 million to his campaign last month — his standard monthly contribution to his presidential effort — despite his claims that he would boost his giving dramatically during the election's homestretch.
The additional $2 million check brings Trump's personal investment to more than $56 million. He has said at recent rallies that he's willing to invest up to $100 million as polls show a tight presidential race.
Saturday is the deadline for some political committees and candidates to report their July-to-September fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission. Presidential candidates report their fundraising to regulators on a monthly basis, and those reports are due next week.
At least one quarterly filer, the Congressional Leadership Fund, reported a big haul.
The super PAC, which is focused on keeping the U.S. House in Republican hands, raised $31.3 million during the third-quarter of the year, boosted by $20 million from casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam. Other recent donors to the group include hedge funder Paul Singer and Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus, who each donated $500,000 last month,
