MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee County's ever-loyal surrogate for GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump lighted up social and mainstream media over the weekend by twice tweeting that it's "pitchforks and torches time."
Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr., who has accused #BlackLivesMatter of being "an anarchist movement," posted tweets calling for a popular revolt along with a photo of angry professionals wielding clubs and torches.
"It's incredible that our institutions of gov, (White House), Congress, (Department of Justice), and big media are corrupt & all we do is bitch,” Clarke wrote Saturday. “Pitchforks and torches time.”
That followed an earlier tweet in which he said the federal government "has lost its healthy fear of the masses and WE THE PEOPLE." He continued: "It is pitchfork & torches time in America."

The tweets brought Clarke media attention from around the country. The sheriff responded by saying __news outlets such as CNN and ABC __news "should be as interested in reporting on Wikileaks and (Democratic presidential nominee Hillary) Clinton corruption than my tweets." He also tweeted that "big media … freak(ed) out" over his statements.
On Sunday, he joked that his posts had sparked "a run on pitchforks and tiki lamp oil at Home Depot!"

These were just two of a string of fiery tweets from the rabble-rousing sheriff, who once warned of a "second American Revolution" if gun control measures are enacted.
Clarke, a Democrat elected four times, also said over the weekend that the government is “infected by corruption” and that the “system of justice broke down & ceased to be legitimate” when Clinton “destroyed evidence and lied to (FBI) agents."
Just heard from a friend that there has been a run on pitchforks and tiki lamp oil at Home Depot! Watch Big Media start calling Home Depots!

In between, he complained in another tweet about the lengthy background check that he had to go through to buy a new AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, his third such background check this year. Clarke amped up the rhetoric in his social media posts as Trump has begun complaining in speeches that the election is rigged and that the media have been working in collusion with the Clinton campaign.
Asked Saturday to explain the tweets, Clarke said via email: “Follow on my blog for best up-to-the-minute news and be sure to cite for readers” where you’re getting your information.
He said he would post something Monday at Patheos.com and had five entries that day, including a lengthy one addressed to Dear Media.
Had INSTANT background check today to pick up new AR-15. ATF delayed 6 days for a cop. Third check this year. Last 2 took 3 days. Nice.

And if all that weren't absurd enough, consider this:
Hundreds of Clarke's supporters are busy tweeting that my coverage of the sheriff "incites violence from readers" because of a racist and offensive comment posted by a reader on a recent column. The comment came down last week.
Yes, this is happening even as Clarke defends his call for "pitchforks and torches."
Of course, that’s not what the 'Democratic operatives with bylines' understood when they saw my tweet. They immediately reported that I was trying to 'incite violence' — an unbecoming habit for a law enforcement official. They were so desperate to make something of it, they contacted the NRA and probably the Trump campaign to get them to disavow me.
Irony much?
Closer to home, Clarke, who has been jetting around the country giving speeches and trying to prop up Trump's now-flagging campaign, has had little to say about incidents in his own department. For instance, he has refused to respond to questions from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the recent death of an inmate from dehydration at the Milwaukee County Jail, which his agency oversees.
