Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson has a sizable lead over Democratic challenger Jim Barksdale, but he still may not be declared the winner on Nov. 8.

According to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll released Friday, Isakson had the backing of 47% of likely Georgia voters, enough for a 15-point lead over Barksdale. However, Isakson's level of support fell below the 50% threshold needed in the state to avoid a runoff.

Part of the reason Isakson isn’t hitting the mark? Libertarian candidate Allen Buckley is polling at 11%.

If no candidate wins a majority of the vote on Election Day, the top-two finishers will meet in a runoff on Jan. 10, 2017.

In the 2008 election, with then-Sen. Barack Obama at the top of the ticket, Democrat Jim Martin was able to force then-senator Saxby Chambliss into a runoff, but Chambliss ended up winning handily.

The AJC poll was conducted Oct. 17-20 and included 839 likely voters, with a margin of error of 4.26 percentage points.
