THE Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will not fire long-time accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers despite the recent Oscars fiasco.
President Cheryl Boone Issacs said the Academy would retain the services of PwC — but with certain safeguards.
To avoid a repeat of this year’s envelope mishap, which led to the wrong film being declared best picture, there will now be a third accountant stationed in the control room on Oscars night, according to Variety.
That accountant will know the winners in advance so they can alert the show’s director in the event of a similar error.

PwC’s United States chairman Tim Ryan is to take a greater responsibility for the Oscars audit and 12-year balloting veteran Rick Rosas will return to that role.
Boone Isaacs announced the decision by the Academy’s Board of Governors in a memorandum to members on Wednesday morning, California time.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has taken full responsibility for this year’s Oscars disaster in which the musical La La Land was wrongly announced as the winner of the prestigious Best Picture award. Moonlight actually won.
And the Academy has already confirmed that the two PwC accountants who were backstage at the time, Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, will not return.
Cullinan was tweeting on his phone in the moments before he mistakenly handed presenter Warren Beatty the wrong envelope.
The accountancy firm has overseen the counting of the Oscars ballots for 83 years.
