At least 4 injured in natural-gas explosion in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. — At least two firefighters, a police officer and a 27-year-old woman were injured Wednesday in a natural gas explosion.

No one was killed, according to Portland Fire & Rescue. One of the firefighters, the police officer and the woman, who were transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, were treated and released.

The other firefighter is still being evaluated, and one other firefighter as well as another officer and a second person in the area also appear to have come to the hospital themselves for treatment

A construction contractor hit a gas line at a building that housed a bagel shop and a salon at about 8:55 a.m. PT Wednesday, authorities said. The contractor reported it to building occupants, who called NW Natural Gas.

About 20 minutes later, an explosion occurred inside the building where crews investigating.

Employees at Portland Bagelworks and Dosha Salon reported that all of their workers evacuated before the explosion, said Lt. Rich Chapman of Portland Fire & Rescue. But at least two or three nearby buildings were damaged.

"We know there was a lot of gas in there," Chapman said. "We're going to be here for awhile."

At least 60 fire and police crews were called to the scene and have been putting out hot spots, he said. Structural engineers have been called in to assess the structural integrity of the building.

Gas has been shut off to the surrounding area and will be turned back on once the area is secured and considered safe, according to spokeswoman Melissa Moore of NW Natural Gas.

"We are on top of it, and safety is a priority," she said

Portland General Electric is reporting that more than 2,500 customers are without power in Northwest Portland.
