A community has been left in "deep shock and anger" after an 11-year-old boy was hit by a truck while crossing a busy road in Navan, Co Meath.

The boy, who remains in a critical condition in Tallaght Hospital, was hit by the vehicle while crossing the N3 to Kells Road in an area of north Navan known as Abbeylands south.

He was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital following the accident shortly after 11am yesterday.

The driver of the truck, believed to be aged in his 30s, was not injured in the collision.

The road was closed after the accident to facilitate Garda forensics and investigations.

Local councillor Wayne Forde has described the stretch of road as "very dangerous" and stressed the need for a pedestrian overpass.

Forde, who lives near the accident site at Johnstown, Navan, said he had urged the local council back in March to erect a pedestrian overpass but his recommendation was turned down due to funding concerns.

"The community is in deep shock and this little guy is in everyone's thoughts and prayers," he said.

"There is a lot of people praying for this young child and a lot of people angry as it is very dangerous."

Citing the need for public access, Mr Forde asked the council on March 2 whether any plans were under way to construct the overpass and was told there were none due to financial constraints.

Mr Forde said he would be reiterating his call for the overpass at Wednesday's Municipal District meeting following the tragedy.

He said the road was extremely dangerous for pedestrians because it is very busy all the time with motorists who are using the N3 and bypassing the nearby M3 motorway due to the toll charges.

Eve Daly (33) who lives in the O'Growney Terrace housing estate adjacent to the busy road said locals have been calling for an overpass for years to make the crossing safer for pedestrians: "That road can be very dangerous. There's a lot of foot traffic but so many people cross at the wrong place," she said.

Meanwhile gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the accident to contact them.
