AS FAR as Aussie icons go, Blinky Bill is right up there.
Most kids who grew up in the 1990s (such as me) undoubtedly spent quite a few Saturday mornings glued to the TV watching the wacky adventures of Blinky and his mates.
So who was the voice behind that cheeky little koala?
That would be former primary school teacher Robyn Moore.
“I’d been working for Yoram Gross Film Studio on about six movies, the Dot movies,” she told news.com.au about how she landed the role.

“And then Yoram bought the rights for Blinky Bill in about 1982 or something and then he wrote the movie and asked me if I would be Blinky Bill.”
But how did Moore come up with the voice of the character?
“He’s based on one of my favourite students that I taught in Tasmania back in 1975 or something, little Scotty,” she said.
“Scotty was in my grade four and he was like a little Steve Irwin.”
But shockingly, little Scotty has no idea that he’s the inspiration for one of Australia’s most iconic TV characters.
“I’m dying to find him,” said Moore.
“I’ve heard he’s a fisherman with his dad now which pleases me enormously because he was a little nature lover back when he was a kid.”

Moore voiced Blinky (as well as Nutsy, Marcia, Miss Magpie, Mrs Koala, Granny Grunty, Ma Dingo, Daisy Dingo and Mrs Rabbit) in the 1992 movie and the subsequent TV series’, The Adventures of Blinky Bill (1993) and Blinky Bill’s Extraordinary Excursion (1994).
The voiceover artist is an demand public speaker and she regularly travels the country sharing her insights into the power of the word, as well as a few Blinky Bill stories.
“Anyone in the audience who is under 30 years old, when I reveal the Blinky voice they literally jump,” said Moore.
“I’ve had grown men cry and say, ‘I had a tough childhood and Blinky was my touchstone.’
“When I do the voice, it takes people back to when they’re four or they’re five and they’re on the couch, when life was easy, so it resonates right inside their soul.”

As well as public speaking, Moore is also a national patron of Make A Wish Australia and even she is surprised by the powerful effect of Blinky Bill.
“I ring children who love Blinky Bill and who have a life threatening medical condition and I’ve got letters from parents saying that after the phone call, their health improved,” said Moore.
FYI — Loved Blinky Bill growing up? Well get excited because a new movie is set to be released later this year. It stars True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten as Blinky as well as Toni Collette and Barry Humphries.
