INXS guitarist Tim Farriss is “feeling the love” of fans as he recovers from his horrific hand injury

INXS guitarist Tim Farriss has been overwhelmed by the deluge of well wishes from fans and friends as he recovers from a horrific injury to his hand which has put his playing future in doubt.

As revealed yesterday by News Corp Australia, the popular musician is recovering from major surgery after severing a ring finger and mangling his left hand in an accident on his boat on January 24.

While surgeons successfully reattached the finger, the hand has suffered extensive damage and Farriss faces many months of rehabilitation.

Fans from Australia and around the world have rallied on the band’s social media accounts in support of the musician who is renowned as one of the nice guys of Australian rock.

“I’m overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and well wishes I’m receiving. Thank you all, I’m feeling the love and it’s really helping me get through this nightmare,” Farriss posted.

Farriss was working on his boat near his home in Fairlight, on Sydney’s northern beaches on the morning of January 24 when his hand became caught in an electric anchor winch.

He underwent two operations, including emergency microsurgery at the Royal North Shore hospital last week, and the finger was reattached after a six-hour operation.

The 57-year-old musician revealed his shocking accident in an email to his band mates and manager Chris Murphy last weekend after spending a week in hospital.

“It was horrific,” Farriss told his brothers Andrew and Jon, Garry Gary Beers and Kirk Pengilly.

“I don’t know if I will be able to play properly again.”

Farriss is expected to undergo intensive physiotherapy for at least the next year to improve the function of his severely damaged hand.

He told his band mates it would be several months before he will be able to gauge how much movement he will regain in his hand.

But it is believed his ring finger has suffered permanent damage and he continues to suffer tremendous pain from the accident.

He reassured his band mates he was receiving the best care for his injuries.

“Tim is now home from the hospital with his family and undergoing physiotherapy as part of the recovery process,” Murphy said yesterday.

“He is getting the best possible care and we hope with time he will regain movement in his finger. This was a terrible accident, we are all here to support him.”

Farriss and his wife Beth moved back to the northern beaches, where INXS formed in 1977, last year.

The traumatic blow to the guitarist comes as he and his INXS band mates had successfully restored their legacy with the wildly successful Never Tear Us Apart miniseries last year.

Farriss had a producer credit on the series and served as the band’s consultant to the production to maintain the fine line between televised fact and fiction.

The ratings juggernaut propelled their music back into the spotlight, making INXS the highest selling Australian artist last year with The Very Best hits compilation.

The show also prompted fans to embrace their biggest album Kick again with last year’s sales pushing it into the top 100 albums for 2014, 17 years after it made them the biggest rock band in the world.

Only last week it jumped back into the top 40 while The Very Best remains in the top 20 after 77 weeks in the ARIA charts.

INXS announced they had quit touring during a concert in Perth in 2012 but had hinted they might be open to potential live opportunities after the success of Never Tear Us Apart.

But those hopes now appear to have been dashed.
