THEY grew up listening to Triple J, dreaming of the day when one of their songs just might make it onto the radio.

The Preatures joined an A-list of Australian artists to kick off celebrations of the youth network’s 40th Beat the Drum birthday in Sydney’s Domain today.

Singer Isabella Manfredi remembers she was in a taxi crossing the Anzac Bridge at sunset, on her way for a songwriting session with bandmates Jack Moffitt and Tom Champion when their song Take A Card came on.

“I was completely ecstatic, I couldn’t believe it. I told the taxi driver it was my band and he didn’t believe me,” she said.

“Hearing your song on the radio for the very first time is still a moment for any band.”

Manfredi said Triple J airplay remains crucial to alternative music acts in Australia.

“We don’t have the population to sustain lots of different major radio stations to cover more alternative music and Triple J has to be lot of things to everybody,” she said.

“I think they do a really good job at it even though it doesn’t please everybody.”

Among the Beat The Drum headliners were You Am I, who represent more than 20 years of making music which has been embraced by the station’s young listeners.

Rogers said while he may not be a Triple J listener these days, the station’s support of Australian music had proven invaluable to opening up touring opportunities for young bands.

“For all the gripes of old soaks who have dropped off their radar, they did help with your ability to tour and I am grateful for that,” he said.

“Now I am just hungry to make a disgustingly loud racket.”

Riptide singer Vance Joy, who faces the biggest year of his career as the opening act on Taylor Swift’s world tour, was one of the early performers, provoking epic singalongs from the 25,000 fans during his set.

Bernard Fanning also performed with him on stage.

The closing acts The Presets and Hilltop Hoods are expected to have the capacity crowd going nuts in the city’s green heart, demonstrating the impact dance and hip hop has had on the airwaves in the past couple of decades.

While fans went wild for the early acts, others did not hold back in complaining about the long queues at the event on social media.
