IT is war. Channels 7, Nine and Ten are coming out all guns blazing — launching their biggest shows in February to start the year with a bang.

The three commercial networks will hit viewers with around 20 major new and returning shows over the next few weeks. And the first theatre of war is reality TV.

Nine is firing the first shot Tuesday night when it launches The Block Triple Threat — a week before official ratings start.

Controversial Block Glasshouse couple Deanne and Darren Jolly are back to ensure Triple Threat hits big with viewers.

Nine will also debut its mammoth 8-part Gallipoli miniseries, starring Kodi Smit-McPhee (Romulus — My Father), in the next fortnight.

Seven blasts off with a new series of My Kitchen Rules, starting February 2.

“Nine is being very aggressive launching The Block Triple Threat before the ratings year has even begun,” media analyst Steve Allen says.

“They are really trying to take it up to Seven and prevent them from getting a strong launch off the back of the Australian Open.”

Ten has its strongest February line-up in years including I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!, starting February 2, and Shark Tank (February 8).

Foxtel is getting in on the act with another series of The Real Housewives of Melbourne, The Affair, The Walking Dead, Selling Houses Australia (February 4) and new show Gogglebox (February 11).

I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! is a massive roll of the dice for Ten. The big budget reality show will screen five nights a week live from South Africa — up against My Kitchen Rules and The Block Triple Threat.

I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! will look very different (from My Kitchen Rules and The Block Triple Threat),” Ten program chief Beverley McGarvey says.

“It is in Africa. It is spectacular. It is live. It is big and bright and shiny.”

Seven will launch Aussie crime series Winter, starring Rebecca Gibney, and large scale docudrama series Australia — The Story of Us.

Seven has a huge slate of international shows in February including US hit How to Get Away with Murder and Katherine Heigl’s State of Affairs.

New episodes of Downton Abbey, Criminal Minds, Revenge and Parenthood will also screen.

“We’ve got a great mix and new and returning hit shows (in February) that we know audiences will love,” Seven program chief Angus Ross says.

Nine looks set to add new US drama Forever as well as new episodes of The Big Bang Theory to its February mix.

The ABC won’t be left out. It is set to screen third series of hit The Doctor Blake Mysteries, with Craig McLachlan, and new Aussie drama Hiding.

But the flood of big new shows this early in the year means the second half of 2015 stands a good chance of being a wasteland of re-runs and filler.

“They are front-loading the year,” Allen says. “Quarter four (October/November 2015) looks like a problem.”

The networks insist that they have the shows to keep viewers entertained all year — but February is the key.

“It is very competitive every year and it will be even more so this year,” Ms McGarvey says.

“The good thing is that viewers win because they get really good quality content.”
