WHEN pictures of a barefoot David Gyngell were splashed across national newspapers in a punch-up with best mate James Packer one of the fears raised for each of the brawling billionaires was: What will his Mrs think?
It was a legitimate concern. Gynge’s wife Nine news presenter Leila McKinnon has admitted she was worried about her husband but perhaps not for the reasons you’d expect.

In an interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, the new mum tells how she reacted that day.
“I do wish he’d worn shoes”, she says.
“He’s actually got some really nice clothes. Sometimes, when we are out and he is wearing his good clothes, I jokingly dare him to pick a fight with another billionaire so we can even up the ledger.”
Though the couple faced some embarrassment and intense media scrutiny, McKinnon says as a journalist, she “could see that it was a great story”.

McKinnon also reveals a softer side to her beloved “brawling bogan” as she shares the story of how he broke down after she suffered terrifying complications following the birth of their second child, Gwendolen.
Following years of fertility struggle, the couple welcomed their first child Ted in October 2012.
After three more rounds of IVF, Leila fell pregnant with a baby girl and her birth was no more simple than the drama that led up to it.
Gwen was born in May with fluid in her lungs and lacked oxygen, and mum had a tough time too suffering a post-partum haemorrhage when she went to visit her baby girl.

“David arrived back at hospital with Ted just in time to see all the nurses rush into my room,” she recalls.
“He couldn’t come in with Ted, so he had to awit outside without knowing what was going on. It was a really heart-stopping moment for him. When he finally was allowed into the room, I said, ‘Are you okay?’, and he just started crying.”

The Inside Story host has returned to the newsroom this year with a team of other mums at Nine, something she says would have been impossible 20 years ago.
“When I first started in the newsroom there is no way you could have continued to do the job with children,” she says.
“It’s now accepted as a natural part of the workplace that women will come and go.”
