JAMES BLUNT has been accused of homophobia after he tweeted about “picking up soap” in response to a magazine cover.

The illustration on the front of News Statesman depicted Blunt along with other famous figures including Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Martin and David Cameron under the tagline: “The class ceiling: From pop to politics, does it pay to be posh?”.

The pop star responded with the comment: “I won’t be picking up the soap when this party moves to the showers.”

But LGBT campaigners and fans are unimpressed with Blunt’s joke about the group, which also included Eddie Redmayne and Boris Johnson.

LGBT charity Stonewall told The Independent: “In 2015 it’s astounding that old ‘jokes’ about gay men dropping the soap in a shower still do the rounds, particularly given today’s popularity of shower cremes. It’s disappointing that James had to trot out a tired 1970s homophobic gag, but gay people will be pleased to know that he does have a new album out (available from all good retailers).”

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell told the Daily Mail: “It would be helpful if James could explain what he meant by those words and make it clear he is not homophobic.”

@JamesBlunt @NewStatesman A rape joke and homophobia all in one sentence. Very nicely done, Mr Blunt. *slow handclap*

Others branded it a “rape joke”, telling Blunt his comments ”weren’t cool”.

The tweet comes soon after the outspoken singer branded UK politician Chris Bryant “a classist gimp” for saying the arts were dominated by former public school boys, naming Blunt and Redmayne among the privileged elite.

It also follows a recent outcry when The Imitation Game star Cumberbatch was called racist was referring to “coloured actors” on live TV.

While Cumberbatch apologised for the gaffe, Blunt has dismissed criticism over his tweet as “today’s PC news.”

And in today’s PC news, jokes about public school boys rogering each other are OFF! Even if we did. http://t.co/RCVKoOEE6l
