IT’S Harold Bishop as we’ve never seen him before — teaching young people how to put on condoms.
Ian Smith, the actor behind one of Ramsay Street’s most loved characters, can now be seen starring in a DVD which is part of a sex education teaching kit called Ask Grandad.
“A grandfather worries awfully about his young granddaughter, and his son is totally inept and he quite obviously hasn’t talked to his daughter about the serious business of sex,” Smith told news.com.au about his role.

“The Grandad sits down at the desk with some condoms and describes how to use them, how to apply them, why they should be used, what they can safeguard you against.
“It’s just a damned good idea.”
The 75-year-old actor agreed to star in the DVD because he doesn’t want young people to go into the world as unprepared as he was at a similar age.
“My father, god love him, he was awfully embarrassed when the time came to talk about it so he didn’t talk about,” said Smith.

“He bought a very small book and he walked in one day, put it down in front of me and said, ‘Here, I think you should read this.’ And walked out.
“That was it. That was my sex education. I didn’t understand a word of it.”
The Ask Grandad program will be released to schools across Australia in response to research that shows more than 40 per cent of teens do not use condoms when they have sex.
*Disclaimer: Due to the licensing agreement, news.com.au isn’t able to show a clip from the short film. But try closing your eyes - picture Harold Bishop talking to you - his dulcet tones washing over you as he shares the “ins and outs” of safe sex ... Magical isn’t it?
