Meryl Streep was told she was too ugly for ‘King Kong’ role

SHE’S considered the greatest actress of her generation with three Academy Awards under her belt — but even Meryl Streep has had bad auditions.

The silver screen star revealed on The Graham Norton Show she once lost a role over looks.

The 65-year-old recounted when she auditioned for the 1976 film King Kong with producer Dino De Laurentiis.

His son had seen the then-unknown actress in a play and brought her in to audition for the role of Dwan.

But when De Laurentiis saw Streep, he looked at his son and asked in Italian: “Why do you bring me this ugly thing?”

The Kramer v Kramer star then boldly responded in Italian, “I’m sorry I’m not beautiful enough to be in King Kong.”

Streep can laugh about the bad audition.

She now holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor, nominated 18 times since her first nomination in 1979 for her performance in The Deer Hunter.
