BRUNO Mars may be the superstar attraction on Mark Ronson’s global hit Uptown Funk but cast an eye down the credits and you will find a couple of widely respected Australian guests on the album.

Tame Impala’s creative controller Kevin Parker and acclaimed solo artist Kirin J Callinan feature on Ronson’s Uptown Special album alongside the legendary Stevie Wonder, rapper Mystikal and American author Michael Chabon.

Ronson said he and fellow “nerdy producer” Parker, who met in Australia during one of the British artist’s tours had spoken about doing a “funk side project”.

Instead, they have collaborated on three tracks, including potential single Daffodils.

“It is as good as anything we would have made in a funk side project,” Ronson said of the psychedelic single.

Ronson enjoys an indirect connection with another Australian hit as both Vance Joy’s breakthrough single Riptide and Uptown Funk coincidentally namecheck Hollywood star Michelle Pfeiffer in their lyrics.

“I haven’t heard from her lawyers yet,” he joked.

“And Vance Joy talks about her in his song too.

“I was thinking in the beginning she may be flattered, and she doesn’t need us to immortalise her, but now everyone is singing her name. We should do Julianne Moore next time.”

Ronson dedicated Uptown Special to the late Amy Winehouse who he helped put on the global music map when he co-produced her Back To Black album.

He said Mars is now the second artist he has enjoyed a powerful chemistry with after they worked on the singer’s massive hit Locked Out Of Heaven.

Uptown Funk has dominated the charts since its release in November, with more than 166 million views for its colourful video.

“I realised it really is the chemistry I had with Amy that made that stuff so great,” he said.

“And not to compare Bruno as an artist with Amy but it’s that same feeling.”

Even after the 1000 times he heard the song in the making of it, Ronson still revels in hearing Uptown Funk played everywhere he goes nor is he over playing it during his DJ sets.

Friends also send him videos of their children singing along to it.

“I heard it again today on the radio, I’ve heard it 1000 times when we were making it and I keep wondering why I’m not sick of it yet,” he said.

“Thanks to the contribution of a lot of people, not just me, there’s just something about that song.”

Ronson’s tour plans are limited by the availability of Mars but it is likely he will return for more DJ sets later in the year.
