Australian teen killers Matt Milat and Cohen Klein were born bad

THEY were born bad — very bad — and these Aussie teens might have got away with their horrific crimes if they hadn’t made the mistake of capturing their chilling exploits on camera.

When the nephew of notorious serial killer Ivan Milat executed his deliberate and premeditated murder of David Auchterlonie, he wanted proof that he was as bad as his infamous uncle.

Auchterlonie had planned to spend the night celebrating his 17th birthday with mates — Milat, Cohen Klein and Chase Day — in Bargo, south west of Sydney. But two of them had something

else in mind.

After the four boys met on the main drag where they’d normally hang out, Milat suggested they go down to Belangalo State Forest, the place where his uncle had murdered and buried seven backpackers.

Day knew nothing of Milat and Klein’s heinous plan, but David — who would soon be dead — was suspicious.

The Nine Network’s Inside Story, which airs tonight, retraces what happened next.

“David was a little fishy about it but they picked us up and it seemed legit that they were just there to have a good time,” Day later told police.

“Matt was calm, didn’t seem angry or anything. I asked him why Belanglo Forest and he’s like ‘Oh, it’s his birthday let’s go and celebrate’. And I was like ‘All right. Well, why did we

really need to go out there for?’

“And he’s like ‘Oh, I just want to check out these plaques, this plaque where Ivan dumped all the bodies’.”

When the boys arrived at Belanglo State Forest, Milat and Klein went to the boot of their car and asked Auchterlonie to join them.

For the next 15 minutes, Auchterlonie was tortured and murdered as Milat chased him around, attacking him with a double-edged axe, at the very same place Ivan had tortured and murdered his victims.

Meanwhile Klein filmed the brutal murder on his mobile phone — crucial evidence that would later convict both him and Milat.

“I seen Matt with an axe and I said ‘what (are you) doing this for?’ and then he, David, starts screaming, like crying and telling Matt to stop ‘cause Matt hit him,” Chase told police.

“And then I go to Matt, like, ‘what are you doing?’ And he’s like ‘you just get in the f***en car and just stay out of it’.”

Day got back into the car and sat in the middle of the back seat.

“I was keeping my head down,” he said.

“I was listening to Auchto just running around screaming, just telling Matt to stop and Matt said ‘come here lay down’. Auchto was like, ‘don’t do this, man’, like crying and saying he was

sorry.

“And then that was it, that’s all I heard and then, like, Auchto just went silent.”

Auchterlonie was raised by his nan and pop, Sandra and David Auchterlonie, who are still trying to come to terms with his senseless death.

Mrs Auchterlonie told Inside Story her grandson’s callous murder was a “thrill kill”.

“They were on a mission, they wanted to kill someone,” she said.

“I just think (Milat) just wanted to big note himself and be like Ivan and start that evil chain again.”

David was a shy kid, who drew homemade cards on Mother’s Day who grew into a more outgoing and popular teen.

“David was such a trusting soul, you know. He never thought bad of anyone so, he was just lured to his death,” Mrs Auchterlonie said.

“I think the hardest part is we raised him and all of a sudden he was just, after celebrating his birthday, within four hours he was gone, we’ll never see him again.”

Meanwhile, Milat’s murder had something in common with a chilling crime in the US.

Just as brazen and shocking, it involved two 16-year-old schoolmates who made a real-life version of the movie SCREAM.

Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik had a passion for horror movies so they decided to make their own — a slasher movie with a real-life victim, their school friend Cassie Stoddard.

They used a video camera to capture the crime in vivid detail. They filmed everything from the pair plotting the murder in their school library right through to the getaway as the two baby-faced killers, high on adrenalin, speed off into the night.

And like Milat and Klein, their homemade horror movie would also be their downfall.

Inside Story airs tonight (Thursday, February 5) at 8.40pm on Nine.
