DARLENE Hider had a flight experience on Monday that she’ll never forget — for all the wrong reasons.

When Hider boarded Delta flight 1576 from Florida to Detroit along with her husband and four children, her sick toddler was crying.

The next thing she knew, a woman sitting in front asked her to “control her kids”. When Hinder’s husband told the kids that they weren’t in trouble, the passenger responded with “Is that how you raise your children”.

Then the passenger then allegedly said: “This is America!”

“I felt as if she was attacking me because she said it in such a mean way,” Hider said. “What am I not American because I’m wearing a scarf? You automatically assume I’m not American because I’m wearing a scarf?

“I felt as if I wanted to defend myself but I couldn’t because of the Islamophobia going on. It’s enough that I wear a scarf. We have to prove ourselves every day to people and it gets tiring. I’m not a terrorist. I’m American. I was born and raised here.”

Things got worse when a Delta employee told Hider and her family to move to the back of the plane, saying she was attempting to “solve the problem”.

When other passengers tried to defend Hider, the employee allegedly threatened to kick them off the flight.

Her brother Abed Ayoub, a lawyer who works for The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination, told news.com.au: “It may not sound like much at first glance, being told to move from your seat, but it fits into a pattern of discrimination against Arab Americans. This happens to our community on planes ...

“These women are mothers. These women are sisters. These women are wives. They are women whose lives are going to be impacted by what you’re saying to them. You don’t have a right to treat them that way.”

Ayoub shared details of the confrontation on Twitter as it was happening, with Hider’s husband relaying what was happening.

My sister wear hijab. She was just assaulted on @Delta flight 1576. Shes with her husband and 4 kids. Airline is not helpful. #Islamophobia

Brian Kruse, a spokesman for Delta, told the Free Press: “We have been in touch with the customer. We have been reviewing the situation. Delta does not condone discrimination of any kind.”

Hinder said: “I want justice for every woman who wears a scarf and who’s Muslim and doesn’t have to worry about being on a plane or in a restaurant or a mall, or walking down the street.”

news.com.au has contacted Delta for further comment.
