BRUNCH is a favourite Australian pastime. And it turns out, we’re pretty damn good at it.

Lonely Planet has released its first The World’s Best Brunches book, featuring 100 of the most delicious brunch meals around the world, according to 42 international food writers.

Five dishes from five Australian eateries star in the book — and there are some surprises on the list.

— Steak sandwich at the Perth Merrywell, Burswood

— Damper on the Desert Awakenings Tour at Ayers Rock Resort

— Ricotta hot cakes at bills, Sydney

— Barra burger at Five Rivers Café, East Kimberley

— Smashed avocado at Industry Beans, Melbourne

Australia’s unofficial king of brunch, Bill Granger, wrote a foreword to the book:

“In a time when we’re all increasingly busy brunch seems to have a new importance. Sure, in some ways it’s a luxury, like afternoon tea, but we need these feel-good rituals that give us the chance to reconnect with friends, families, food and ourselves, all the more.

“The fact that brunch is not on the everyday ‘schedule’ in the same way that breakfast, lunch and dinner are gives it an air of spontaneous, devil-may-care, unstructured abandon that we all deserve to indulge in from time to time.”

Lonely Planet: The World’s Best Brunches is out next month.
