LOS ANGELES: Canberra and Hollywood collided in Los Angeles on Sunday as the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) and G’Day USA joined forces for a night of Aussie indulgence.
The red carpet at the Hollywood Palladium was buzzing as guest after guest made their way down the ruby rug as the paparazzi watched their every move.
Malcolm Turnbull had everyone in the media posse excited, but refused to be drawn on any speculation about a leadership battle.

“This isn’t the forum to talk about this, as we are here to celebrate the fine contribution of Australians here in the US,’’ he told the media throng.
Guests and presenters included Nicole Kidman, Rebel Wilson, Phillip Noyce and Scarlett Johansson, who presented Chris Hemsworth with the annual ‘Honoree’ award for his representation of Australia in American culture.

700 guests were treated to performances by Human Nature, Shephard and Nathaniel Dean.
The cocktail-style event, which was catered by Rockpool’s Neil Perry, had celebs in a more relaxed mood — a change from the usual sit-down event the G’Day Gala had become in previous years.
The ‘international’ AACTA announced seven winners nominated across the following categories — Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
AACTA President Geoffrey Rush shared the stage with his fellow Aussie actors, including Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Debicki, John Travolta, Rachel Griffiths, Jonathan LaPaglia, Rebel Wilson and Russell Crowe.
Birdman lead the wins with a total of four wins including Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Direction (Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and Best Lead Actor (Michael Keaton).

The film, which has received critical acclaim and was named one of the Best Films of 2014 by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review, beat fellow best film nominees Boyhood and The Imitation Game, which had received five AACTA nominations each, including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Screenplay.
Still Alice’s Julianne Moore picked up the AACTA International Award for Best Lead Actress and is now the frontrunner for the Best Lead Actress Oscar, after winning the Golden Globe and SAG Award for her portrayal of a linguistics professor diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Similarly to Moore, both Golden Globe and SAG Award Winners, J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) each picked up their statuettes for the AACTA International Award for Best Supporting Actor and Actress.
Partying went on til the early hours with the cool W Hollywood the epicentre of the afterparty for guests and celebs alike.
