DANIEL Johns is missing a droid.
As swirling winds whip across the Stockton sand dunes on a searingly hot summer day, Johns looks like a reimagined Luke Skywalker walking through a desert planet.
It is his first video shoot in eight years for his debut solo single Aerial Love.

Shooting was cancelled on the first day due to fierce gusts battering the famed dunes outside his hometown of Newcastle and preventing the use of camera drones.
When they were finally able to get the cameras airborne the following day, a classic summer heatwave made filming even more intense for the star, the extras and the crew.
That may explain some of the obscured nudity in the clip but Johns kept his clothes on.
“The dunes actually looked spectacular but it was all pretty intense,” he said.

“The whole idea was to capture big aerial perspectives by using drone cameras ... but the winds were too strong in the first 24 hours though so they couldn’t film anything.
“We finally started shooting on the second day but it was still 35 degrees in the shade and there were lots of sandstorms.
“It was like we were filming one of those desert scenes from Star Wars. I felt like I needed a droid.”
The stark setting for the shoot is matched by the minimalist and surprisingly stripped-back sound of Aerial Love which has shocked Silverchair fans with its dramatic departure from his former rock days.

When the song dropped on Thursday, it instantly drew comparisons with sonic trendsetters Frank Ocean and James Blake.
While staunch ‘chair fans are resistant to the sound of a solo Johns, there were plenty of signals he was going to surprise people with his new music.
Everyone knew he was working with his good friend, Empire Of The Sun’s Luke Steele, suggesting he was exploring more of an electronic direction. He also featured on the hit single Impossible from Australian rapper 360 last year.
But the debut single was a collaboration with Grammy Award-winning producer Joel Little, the New Zealand music maker who helped construct Lorde’s genre-bending album Pure Heroine.

Finally, eight years after Silverchair released their final album Young Modern and four years after he put the band into “indefinite hiatus” publicity-speak for splitsville, the 35-year-old musician has a single to share.
“I’ve kept this music inside for ages so It feels great to finally get it out,” he said.
“I love the sonic world Joel and I created with this song.
“We recorded it at my house in Newcastle and put the finishing touches on it at Joel’s New Zealand studio.
“The song kinda feels like it’s floating in the sky half way between those two places. From the day we wrote it I wanted it to be the first new song I shared with people.”
Daniel Johns, Aerial Love
Johns may have alienated his rock fans with the song but within hours of premiering it on Triple J, the Aerial Love EP had raced to No. 2 on iTunes on pre-orders alone.
The EP is released on March 13 and the video is expected to premiere by the end of the week.
Johns is keeping the plans for his solo album and tour under wraps for now.
