FORMER Australian of the Year Lee Kernaghan has assembled a star-studded choir including Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian to pay tribute to our diggers on the anthemic Spirit Of The Anzacs single.

The song is the first taste of the ambitious album which has brought soldiers’ letters from Gallipoli to Afghanistan to life in song.

Sheppard, Megan Washington and Shannon Noll also contribute to the charity single which will raise money for Legacy and Soldier On.

“We were shooting for the moon and landed out among some of the biggest stars in Australian music,” he said.

The project was inspired by Kernaghan’s visit to the Australian War Memorial last year when he was shown archives of soldiers letters to family from the front lines.

He and producer Garth Porter were inspired to write songs quoting from the moving missives from war zones as Australians prepare to mark the 100th anniversary of the Anzacs landing at Gallipoli.

The first single is reminiscent of the anthems which have reflected the Australian spirit in song including I Still Call Australia Home and We Are Australian.

Mauboy’s part in the song references the Vietnam War, tying her again to the conflict which served as the backdrop to her starring role in the The Sapphires film.

Kernaghan and Porter have already played the songs to the families of Diggers whose letters they have accessed for the album and were relieved to receive the thumbs up.

“They read these letters out on Anzac Day each year but as I read them but I wanted to give them a voice in song,” he said.

“Everybody whose story is told on the record is mentioned somehow in this charity single.”

The single is available on iTunes from today with the Spirit Of The Anzacs album released on February 27.
