Eddie Redmayne had an ‘instant, overwhelming fear’ of playing Stephen Hawking

EXPECT Eddie Redmayne to be a name you start hearing a lot this year.

The 33-year-old British star has just taken out the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor — Motion Picture, Drama for his role in The Theory of Everything and is a frontrunner to scoop the bulk of the big gongs this awards season.

It’s a good time to be Eddie Redmayne. The James Marsh-directed drama traces the extraordinary life of astronomer Stephen Hawking, who has motor neurone disease. Along with a host of plaudits already, the film has received an even higher accolade — praise from Hawking himself, who teared up during the screening and referred to the biopic as “broadly true”.

Redmayne features in the February edition of GQ Australia magazine and spoke about his relationship with Hawking, revealing that he only met the 73-year-old professor for the first time four days before filming began. “It was deeply terrifying because I’d spent the previous six months watching every documentary and reading everything there is about him,” Redmayne said. “I embarrassed myself by telling him about himself, vomiting forth information.”

He also admitted when he was cast in the film he had an “instant, overwhelming fear” because he knew Hawking would be seeing it.

Tipped to land the Oscar this year, Redmayne simply said Hawking’s “generous” response to his portrayal was his “huge reward,” adding that he tries not to listen to all of the awards hype.

In fact, Redmayne is already focused on his next project, The Danish Girl, playing Einar Wegener, one of the first ever people to undergo gender reassignment surgery. “I’m gently tiptoing into the script and reading a lot about people from the transgender community,” he told GQ of the equally challenging role.

Looking at his recent success, it’s easy to see why Eddie Redmayne is fast earning himself a place among Hollywood royalty. Yet the ever-humble star says he never loses sight of just how lucky he is every time he gets offered a job. “It’s so out of your control, you never know how successful you’ll be.

“I’m absolutely aware I’ve come from a background that’s extraordinary, I’ve been incredibly lucky,” he said.
