Faces to watch in 2015 ... in the movies

As Prince might say, you might not know them now, but baby they’ll be stars. Here’s the faces you’ll come to know well in 2015.

OSCAR ISAAC

Age: 35

From: New York, USA via Guatemala

What:A Most Violent Year, Ex Machina, Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, X-Men: Apocalypse

Oscar Isaac has so far managed to work with the Coen Brothers, Ridley Scott, Steven Soderbergh, Madonna and on a Bourne movie without getting much in the way of public recognition: “I think because I tend to look quite different from film to film,” he says. But even the most talented chameleon would struggle to withstand the exposure coming Isaac’s way in 2015: Firstly, there’s Academy Awards buzz (Oscar winning an Oscar!) surrounding his performance in gritty drama A Most Violent Year. Then he’ll bend minds in AI thriller Ex Machina. He’s been cast as the titular baddie in the next X-Men instalment, Apocalypse, which will shoot this year. Oh, and, he’ll play X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron in some little thing called Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.

CARA DELEVINGNE

Age: 22

From: London, UK

What:Pan, Paper Towns, Suicide Squad

London ‘It Girl’, Burberry model, gossip fodder (current rumour: dating Selena Gomez) and now actor. Delevingne tells Vogue acting is currently only a “hobby”, but it is a career she craved. After a small role in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, Delevingne scored a part in a Michael Winterbottom film and has no less than five movies due for release in 2015. Among these are Pan (she won’t say whether she’s playing Tinkerbell) and Paper Towns. The latter is a young-adult romance/mystery based on a novel by John “The Fault in Our Stars” Green, with Delevingne suitably cast as a high school kid’s enigmatic crush. This year will also see her turn superhero, filming DC Comics’ Suicide Squad with Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie.

TARON EGERTON

Age: 25

From: Wales, UK

What:Kingsman: The Secret Service

There’ll be all sorts of “Junior James Bond” talk once the world cops an eyeful of Taron Egerton in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Here, director Matthew Vaughn does for stiff English spy stories what he did for superhero tales with Kick-Ass; that is, make it fizz and pop in brash, modern style. The RADA-trained Egerton is convincing as a cockney geezer who is taken under the wing of Colin Firth and trained as a secret agent. Egerton has also wrapped the thriller Legend, about London gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray (both played by Tom Hardy).

DAKOTA JOHNSON

Age: 25

From: California, USA

What:Fifty Shades of Grey, Black Mass, A Bigger Splash

INAPPROPRIATE: Melanie Griffith is going to give Fifty Shades of Grey a miss

Even if Fifty Shades of Grey turns out to be a complete stinker, the world will have seen so much of Dakota Johnson by the end of February, she’ll have made her mark. The daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, she’s already got the obligatory child-of-famous-people rehab stint out of her system and a should-never-have-been-cancelled sitcom (Ben and Kate) on her resume for hard-yards credibility. Her casting as Anastasia Steele in the steamy Fifty Shades adaptation may seem to have come out of nowhere, but Judd Apatow is a fan (he recommended her for The Five-Year Engagement) and she was (briefly) great as the student Justin Timberlake has a one-night stand with in The Social Network. Word is Johnson has been cautious about how to follow Shades, turning down some “big” offers in favour of serious/cred roles in gangster tale Black Mass (with Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch) and A Bigger Splash (with Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton).

LEVI MILLER

Age: 12

What:Pan

While most Aussie boys spend Grade 6 chasing a footy, Queensland kid Levi Miller spent most of his last year of primary school at Leavesden Studios outside London (the same place they made Harry Potter) shooting a movie with Hugh Jackman. Miller was chosen to play Peter in Pan after an extensive search by director Joe Wright, which included an open casting call at Wembley Arena. Miller’s previous acting gigs include a one-off speaking role in the Australia-shot US sci-fi series Terra Nova and TV ads for Kmart, Subway, Sunrice and Ray’s Outdoors.

ABBEY LEE

Age: 27

From: Melbourne

What:Mad Max: Fury Road, Ruben Guthrie, Gods of Egypt

New York-based, sans-surname model (yup, she’s dropped the Kershaw) is starting her screen career at home in Australia. Brendan Cowell, who cast her as a Czech model in his directing debut Ruben Guthrie, calls her “an absolute natural”. George Miller, who tapped her for Mad Max: Fury Road, says her modelling skills quickly adapted to the screen: “By deep instinct, she is a gifted actor.” Meanwhile, her tomboy past came in handy for the stuntwork required to play an assassin in Alex Proyas’ fantasy Gods of Egypt (co-stars: Geoffrey Rush, Gerard Butler). “I don’t want to have that label of model-turned-actress,” Abbey Lee told Vogue. “I really want people to respect what I do for my craft, and not from where I’ve come from.”

KEVIN HART

Age: 35

From: Philadelphia, USA

What:The Wedding Ringer, Get Hard, Top Five

In 2014, stand-up comedian Kevin Hart proved he was movie money — at least in the US, where his films (Ride Along, About Last Night, Think Like a Man Too, Top Five) grossed $328 million. Action comedy Ride Along, in particular, did such bonkers business it even demanded an Australian release — a market in which “black” films traditionally don’t get a chance. This year, Hart will take advantage of that crack in the international market with two mass-appeal comedies: The Wedding Ringer, in which he plays a Best Man for hire who comes to the rescue of a geeky groom (Frozen’s Josh Gad), and Get Hard, where Will Ferrell’s white collar criminal asks the only black man he knows, Hart’s car washer, to prepare him for prison life. He also plays Chris Rock’s agent in Top Five, which opens locally in March.

ELIZABETH BANKS

Age: 40

From: Massachusetts, USA

What: Pitch Perfect 2, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2, Magic Mike XXL, Love & Mercy

Already a familiar face (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Modern Family, 30 Rock), funny lady Elizabeth Banks steps into the director’s seat in 2015 with Pitch Perfect 2. Banks originated the idea of the surprise 2012 hit and cameoed as a commentator. Previously, she directed a segment in the much-derided Movie 43, but this will be a whole new level of scrutiny, given how few female directors are handed the keys by Hollywood studios. On top of that, Banks the actor will be seen as Effie Trinket in the finale of The Hunger Games franchise, in Channing Tatum’s male stripper sequel Magic Mike XXL and as Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s wife in Love & Mercy.
