TRAINING to be a flight attendant isn’t all about mixing drinks and giving safety instructions. These airlines put their recruits through some seriously hard core programs
It was reported earlier this week that TAM Airlines have a mandatory Amazon jungle survival course and travel site Jaunted found a few more bizarre ways that flight attendants train. You’d never expect your cabin crew to be masters at these.
TAM Airlines jungle survival
With nearly 60 per cent of Brazil covered in the Amazon rainforest, it’s no wonder that the country’s airline puts its flight attendants through an Amazon jungle survival course.
Mandated as a requirement by the Brazilian government, hopeful flight attendants are shown how to use flares and how to gather debris from a crashed plane to build shelter for survival.

Delta Airlines wine snobs
Delta Airlines takes its wine so seriously its introduced a Sky Sommelier program for its flight attendants. Training with Delta’s Master Sommelier and head of Delta’s on-board wine program, Andrea Robinson, flight attendants learn how to pair wines with your meals, how to pour the perfect glass and explain to you the different flavours and histories of their wines.
You’ll know if a flight attendant has passed the course as they’ll be wearing a silver wine bottle pin on their uniform lapel.

Virgin Australia chefs in the sky
Business class crew at Virgin Australia are personally trained by their celebrity resident head chef Luke Mangan in how to cook, plate and garnish meals.
An aircraft oven set up in Luke’s test kitchen has been designed to replicate the aeroplane’s on-board kitchen. With the menu changing more than 50 times a year, these are some highly trained chefs in the sky.

Singapore Airlines black belts
Known as The Singapore Girl, Singapore Airline’s flight attendants may look immaculate and harmless on the outside but out of work they are encouraged to participate in the airline’s extra curricular activities.
Singapore Airlines have a cabin crew martial arts club with many practising taekwondo and achieving black belts.
They also put their attendants through a course called REACT that teaches crew how to handle unruly and abusive passengers on-board.

Virgin Atlantic model requirements
Flight attendants with Virgin Atlantic are given the airline’s specially produced book, Runway, that details exactly what a Virgin flight attendant must do to achieve the Virgin look.
Tips from the book include:
— If your shoes get smelly, fill them with orange peel overnight and in the morning they’ll smell fruity and fresh
— Clean pen marks on your handbag with hairspray
— It’s British tradition (and Virgin Atlantic’s), to always wear the bottom button undone on your vest or tailored coat.
