VANESSA Hudgens and Julianne Hough have been picked to lead a live, television remake of the iconic Fifties rock n’ roll musical, Grease.
Hudgens, best known for playing Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical trilogy, has been cast as Rizzo, the tough-talking leader of the Pink Ladies originally played by Stockard Channing.
Hough is set to fill Olivia Newton-John’s lead role of Sandy in the new production, slated to air in the US early next year.

“Grease is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” Hough said.
“My siblings and I watched it and played it out over and over when we were kids. This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.”

Hudgens, also 26, said she never imagined she would play Rizzo, a role she described as a “new challenge”.
“She is such an iconic character that continues to transcend generations. I cannot wait to bring her to life on live television,” she said.

The shows’s male lead, Danny Zuko — made famous by John Travolta in the 1978 film — is yet to be cast.
The Fox production will be broadcast live in the US in early 2016, following in the footsteps of NBC’s hit The Sound of Music and less successful Peter Pan.
I'm SO excited to be joining the cast of #GreaseLive as Sandy! #FOX January 2016 :) #tellmeaboutitstud
