AS one of the best reviewed shows currently screening, none of Justified’s five seasons have ever scored below 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the acclaim, it’s hardly been a magnet for awards.

But ask Timothy Olyphant, who plays cool, laconic lawman Raylan Givens, and he’ll tell you he doesn’t deserve any honours either.

“As far as those awards, I suppose now I think about it, I don’t think anyone should have ever nominated me because it’s really been quite easy to do,” he says, in his familiar drawl.

“He’s just cool and smooth and there’s some humour there, it’s really been fun to play.”

As an executive producer, Olyphant and showrunner Graham Yost both agreed to call time on the series, about a US Marshall cleaning up the hick town where he grew up. The FX network wasn’t pleased and tried to talk them around.

“I figure it’s better to go early than late huh?” says Olyphant (Die Hard 4.0, Hitman).

“After a while you just get an instinct for when a story wants to wrap up, and it felt like it was time.”

The sixth and final season, beginning on FX today, is billed as a showdown between Givens and his former friend turned nemesis Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), surely the most politely well-spoken hick criminal to have ever lived. Many parallels have been drawn between the pair on the show, almost as if they’re two sides of the same coin.

“I think you could make a case for that,” he says. “I think Raylan seemed to have an understanding (early on) that one or two things here or there and he could’ve ended up on the other side (of the law).”

Based on a character Elmore Leonard created in the 1970s, the author (famous for Get Shorty and Rum Punch, which became movie Jackie Brown) died in August 2013 aged 87.

Olyphant says he learnt a great deal from the author who was “cool and funny, just like his writing”.
Leonard said once that when Olyphant delivered the lines “they were just the way I heard them when I wrote them” but Olyphant bats the praise away.

“He didn’t write the guy yesterday, he wrote him back in the ‘70s so I dunno, he might have forgot how he wanted him to sound,” he jokes.

“But it was real cool of him. It’s one thing if he felt that way, it’s another thing for him to share it with everybody. It was all very appreciated.”

Halfway through shooting the final season, Olyphant isn’t giving anything away other than hinting: “I’m not sure if everyone’s going to live through it.”

Looking back, he says in his own inimitable manner, they’ve had a pretty good run.

“We’ve been really lucky, sometimes you commit to some TV show that’s lucky enough to go on for a few years but you get one asshole (in the cast) and it can be a long couple of years. We haven’t had any of that.”
