ONE of them is colour blind, one was a former Bond Girl and another was almost killed in a carjacking in South Africa.
Here are some little known facts about the five Best Actor and five Best Actress nominees at next month’s Academy Awards:

Steve Carell - nominated for Foxcatcher:
Carell was set to pursue law rather than acting, but he had a change of mind when he struggled to answer the question, ‘Why do you want to be a lawyer?’ on his law school application form.
“I didn’t have a valid answer,” said Carell to Boston.com.
“I went in to talk to my parents, and they sat me down at the kitchen table and said, ‘Well, what do you like to do? Let’s make a list.’
“I’ll never forget, they said: ‘It’s your life, it’s not ours. It’s about doing something that you enjoy and that fulfils you.’ That, I thought, was the best advice ever.”

Remember that scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin where Steve Carell’s character gets his chest waxed? Surely you can’t forget him yelling “KELLY CLARKSON!”
Turns out that scene was 100 per cent legit.
“It had to be real,” said Carell after the movie’s release.
“It wouldn’t be as funny if it was mocked up. You have to see it really happening.”
Bradley Cooper - nominated for American Sniper:
For his role as Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in American Sniper, Bradley Cooper had to pack on almost 20kg of weight.
“He was eating about every 55 minutes or something like that, and I want to say it was about 8,000 calories a day,” the film’s producer, Jason Hall told People.

If you already think that Bradley Cooper is sexy, just wait till you hear him speak French!
“When I was a kid, I remember watching Chariots of Fire and French is the official language of the Olympics,” said Cooper.
“So there’s a scene where a guy was speaking French and I thought, ‘Man, that sounds so cool. I want to learn French.’” And he did.
Michael Keaton - nominated for Birdman:
Michael Keaton dated Friends star Courteney Cox for six years before they split in 1995. A few months after they went their separate ways, Cox told People magazine, “It’s the most important relationship I’ve ever had and I think he’s the most wonderful person I’ve ever met”.

Michael Keaton isn’t the actor’s real name. He was born Michael Douglas, but when you join the actor’s union you can’t register with the same name as someone else and unfortunately there was already a Michael Douglas, so he chose Keaton instead.
Benedict Cumberbatch - nominated for The Imitation Game:
When he was 26 years old, the actor cheated death when he was carjacked in South Africa by six armed men.
“It taught me two things,” said Cumberbatch.
“That is that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own. And that’s a very profound thing to actually get your head around. It’s very glib and easy to say, but to actually experience that and be made very aware of it is something. It’s made me want to live a life slightly less ordinary.”

The actor is famous for his amazing impressions of other celebrities.
Eddie Redmayne - nominated for The Theory of Everything:
The actor played rugby on the same team as Prince William at Eton College.
“I always felt slightly sorry for him because everyone wanted to tackle the future king of England,” said Redmayne to Glamour.
“He took all the hits.”

Redmayne is colour blind and relies on his wife, Hannah Bagshawe, to help him pick out his outfits.
“When I go out to premieres and events, I have to check that the trousers match the top,” said Redmayne to People in 2013.
“I recently wore a blue suit - and I had to ask her if it was really blue rather than purple. She assured me it was blue. I could not tell the difference. I’m lucky to be with someone who is very supportive.”
Reese Witherspoon - nominated for Wild:
The first thing you need to know about Reese is that Reese is not her first name. She was born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon and then legally changed her first name to Reese, which was her mother’s maiden one.

Many people think she met her ex-husband and father of her two children Ryan Phillippe, on the set of Cruel Intentions. But they actually met at her 21st birthday party, in 1997 when Witherspoon told him, “I think you’re my present.”
She has also made cameos on two of television’s biggest shows. In 2000, she played the role of Rachel Green’s sister Jill on Friends and in 2002, she became a cartoon in The Simpsons playing Greta Wolfcastle in the episode called The Bart Wants What It Wants.
Rosamund Pike - nominated for Gone Girl:
While many people hadn’t heard of her until Gone Girl hit the big screen, Pike was actually a Bond Girl. In 2002, she played Miranda Frost in Pierce Brosnan’s Die Another Day. She also revealed, “Before I was cast as a Bond girl, I had never actually seen a James Bond movie.”

She also auditioned for the role of Amy in Gone Girl over Skype while filming in a remote area of Scotland. She even said she had to join a gym just to get an internet connection so she could Skype with Director David Fincher.
Julianne Moore - nominated for Still Alice:
Born Julie Anne Smith, she had to change her name when she registered with the Actors Guild as every variation of her name seemed to be taken. She then combined her first two names and assumed her father’s middle name as her surname.

She is also one of only eleven actors and actresses who have been nominated for both a Supporting and a Lead Acting Academy Award in the same year. In 2003, she was nominated for a Supporting Oscar for her role in The Hours (2002), and in the Lead category for her role in Far from Heaven (2002). The other ten are Fay Bainter, Teresa Wright, Barry Fitzgerald, Jessica Lange, Al Pacino, Sigourney Weaver, Emma Thompson, Holly Hunter, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Foxx.
Marion Cotillard - nominated for Two Days, One Night
Acting runs in the blood for Cotillard’s family. Her father was an actor, playwright and director and her mother was an actress and drama teacher.

But she’s also a singer and has been known to dress up like a man and perform under the name Simone with the French singer Yodelice. She has also never had her ears pierced.
Felicity Jones - nominated for The Theory of Everything:
The British actress has another famous family member. Her uncle is actor Michael Hadley, best known for The Boat That Rocked (2009), Diana (2013) and Into the Storm (2009).

She has appeared in both Girls (as Dot in 2013) and Robina Redmond in Doctor Who in 2008.
At the start of her career she played a school bully, picking up the role of the Hallow in The Worst Witch and then Weirdsister College at age 15 in 1998 before taking four years off to complete an English degree from Wadham College at Oxford University. Fellow nominee Rosamund Pike also attended the same college.
